Decarbonising logistics and services

To deliver on our climate commitments, we work to increase the use of renewable electricity and green fuels in our landside operations. In 2023, we launched ECO Delivery Inland, we improved energy efficiency in warehouses, and we expanded our deployment of electric trucks, amongst other things.

Why inland decarbonisation matters

The rapidly growing need for end-to-end logistics solutions and heightened expectations for sustainable supply chains are driving demand for more road, rail, warehouse and air decarbonisation solutions. These are reflected in our commitments to increase our adoption of renewable electricity and/or green fuels in these operations.

Our ambition

We will deliver an emergency response to the climate crisis and take leadership in the transformation of the transport and logistics sector to climate neutral operations.

Inland transportation (truck, rail, barge)

To achieve 100% green landside transportation solutions by 2040, we are prioritising efficiency measures and promoting a shift to lower emissions transport modes like rail and barge. We are also advance clean fuel alternatives and electrification in heavy-duty trucking and have started piloting biofuels and battery-electric trucks in collaboration with our customers.

Contract logistics and cold chains

We are combining technologies, including energy optimisation for buildings and operations, and clean fuels for equipment, heating and infrastructure. New sites will be built to serve a low or zero-carbon business, aspiring to LEED 'Platinum', BREEAM 'Excellent' or equivalent accreditation.

Air freight

The high cost and limited availability of SAF makes decarbonising air, and our 2030 air cargo target, particularly challenging. regulatory support and technological breakthroughs are needed to drive the transformation. We focus on developing regional roadmaps and initiatives, undertaking pilots and developing a commercially viable SAF sourcing strategy.

Featured highlights and case stories

Decarbonising landside logistics

Maersk is investigating both existing and emerging trucking technologies from battery electric to fuel cells and hydrogen. We currently see battery electric becoming the dominant energy system. Transitioning our landside transportation however presents challenges beyond technology. Maersk is dependent on our suppliers’ willingness to invest in green assets, and on energy providers and energy infrastructure for green power. Addressing these challenges will likely require Maersk to rethink how we engage with suppliers, partners and customers to effectively de-risk capital investment across the value chain and incentivize the scaling of these technologies until the end of the decade, when we forecast cost of ownership for electric trucks to reach parity with fossil fuels.

Maersk builds state-of-the-art cold storage facility

During 2023, Maersk constructed the Hamilton, New Zealand 16,000 sqm site of fully convertible temperature-controlled space during 2023, to begin operations early 2024. It can provide storage for over 21,000 pallets of cold chain products and integrate cold store with depot and intermodal connections, to provide end-to-end storage, fulfilment, distribution and inland transportation services for New Zealand import and export customers. The facility has 5-star Green Star accreditation, and is powered by green energy through solar panels. It also has an environmentally friendly CO2 cooling plant and rainwater harvesting, and was built with a low carbon construction policy.
